How would his dreams for equality and equal rights square with today’s hyper-emphasis on racial and ethnic identities, on differences rather than commonalities? Isn’t the trend towards special and unequal rights an affront to Dr. King’s dreams of colorblindness, minimizing differences, and equal opportunity?






With 568 federally recognized Indian tribes—on a list that’s still growing— modern government-centered tribal sovereignty, with its related politics and legal agendas, emphasizes apartness, separatism, and ever-expanding tribal jurisdiction. The U.S. Constitution doesn’t apply to Indians in legal Indian country (reservations and trust lands.)
